1997 Aardvark awards
Here are the 1997 Aardvark Net Industry Awards as voted by Aardvark's readers.

Because these awards have been chosen by the people who use the Net, I like to feel that they are an accurate representation of the public's taste and preferences. The "Total Nominations" refers to the total number of sites, products or services nominated for the award.

Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to all those who took the time to register their votes.

SODA
60% of Aardvark readers voted SODA the best Internet-based Award giving it a landslide win over its closest rival, the NetGuide Awards.

Total nominations in this category 6

NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR
It was in fact a tie between Netscape 4 and Netscape 3, each scoring 30% of the votes for a combined total of 60%. Even individually, the Netscape browsers outscored their closest rival, Microsoft's IE4 which gained just 20% of the votes.

Total nominations in this category 7

X2 TECHNOLOGY
Perhaps not pure hardware but X2 modems won with 25% of the votes, just outranking the nearest rival, CISCO routers.

Total nominations in this category 12

ICQ
A clear winner with 27% of the vote in a category with a lot of nominations, ICQ is obviously a very popular piece of software amongst Aardvark readers.

Total nominations in this category 28

TELECOM WHITE PAGES
This category was another popular one with a lot of nominations and a close finish. With 11% of the vote, The White Pages site was only just ahead of the other Telecom Directories site, the Yellow Pages.

Total nominations in this category 23

DAVE BLYTH
With 18% of the vote, Dave is this years winner of the coveted Netizen of the Year Award. There were a surprising number of nominations in this category and honourable mention must go to Russell Brown who was a very close second.

Total nominations in this category 17

XTRA
A clear win for Telecom's XTRA in this category with 24% of the vote in a wide field. If ClearNet want a chance at this award they'll have to remember that no matter how good your site may be, it needs a little freshening up every now and then.

Total nominations in this category 18

USR X2 MODEMS
Another clear winner in this category, the USR X2 modems seem to have a lot of satisfied users with 36% of the vote.

Total nominations in this category 11

ICQ
Is ICQ shareware or freeware? I guess it is, they're not charging for it so it qualifies for this award - and again, Aardvark readers consider it a clear winner with 31% of the vote.

Total nominations in this category 12

NZ NetGuide Magazine
I gave NetGuide some flack for the choices made in their own awards but they certainly deserve this win. Out front by a country mile in the biggest landslide of this year's awards, they received 74% of the votes for a very well deserved win. Congratulations!

Total nominations in this category 7

Danny De Hek
This category produced a large number of nominations - and Danny still won by a fair margin with 20% of the votes! Much as I hate giving him any kind of further publicity, you - the readers are the ones that decide these awards so Danny gets it!
