From: Peter Harrison For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Net Scam My wife received the letter from ING yesterday and was all ready to post off a cheque to "ensure we keep our domain". Lucky for me she called me up to tell me how lucky we were that ING was going to protect our domain name. I then had to explain that the letter didn't mean I could loose my current domain, and that the letter was a deliberate attempt to confuse people into paying money to an unethical Australian company. If this company does decide to sue, I will be more than willing to provide evidence that they were using deceiptfull practises. Also, this is against the fair trading act, and should be reported to the Ministry of Commerce. From: Giles Boutel For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Web based AI There's an interesting tale of exactly how complicated making a 'SETI'-like app for the purpose of creating an emergent AI actually is. It has the delightful title of Waking Up from the Economy of Dreams -or- The Intricate and Peculiar Torture of Taking One’s Tech Company Bankrupt and it can be found at: www.goertzel.org/benzine/WakingUpFromTheEconomyOfDreams.htm NB. It's fairly long, though quite accessible in style. From: Allister For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Genetics and survival After reading the first two paragraphs of today's column, I was thinking the point was going to be that we will need GE to keep our food chain intact as we continue to destroy both it and the environment. Far more likely, I'd say!Now Have Your Say
