Subj: Copy protection

Copy protection = stopping you from playing your music where you
want.

I’m a guitarist in a covers band and I use a software
program to slow down tricky parts of songs such as guitar
solo’s that makes it a cinch to learn. Unfortunately, the
software I’m using requires you to rip the track from a CD
to either .wav or .mp3. When we decide to learn a new song,
I usually go out and buy the whole CD to get the track that
I’m after, but with some of the newer songs being copy-
protected I find it’s more trouble than it’s worth, and I
end up downloading it off the net. Illegal? Certainly, but
if I had any other viable option of getting the track onto
my computer I would use it.

PS. I was tempted to buy the latest Massive Attack CD but
after noticing the little "copy protected" sticker on it, I
left it on the shelf. I love the band, and am going to see
their concert next month, but that's how much of a bad
taste copy protection has left in my mouth.

Subj: CDs, DVDs

In the not too distant past (last year) I would buy 1-3 CDs a week.

Nowadays we get all our music online and I have changed my CD buying
habits to buying music DVDs. They hold much more songs, have all sorts of
options, better quality ( 5 channel surround sound) and you get to watch
what you see.

CDs are history (so are videos, min-discs and laser discs).

DVDs are only way to go at the moment. When economical and user friendly
DVDs arrive (and they will) the record industry will be in even more
trouble than they are now.

Why don't they pull their heads out of the sand (or a body cavity) and
realise their format choice and entire process is now flawed?

There must be a RADICAL change in the way things are done and "copyright
protection" is not the answer.

Subj: Of course CD's are dead

CD's are as dead as vinyl records and VHS video cassettes.
The body will keep twitching for a while yet, (hey vinyl
records still sell in small numbers to niche markets) but
you would be mad to think that CD and Video tape sales will
continue at there current rate of sale. The weird thing is
records companies trying to blame digital downloads for
sales problems totally ignores the US ecomony woes, DVD's
and of course the current generation of consoles.

In the last month I have brought two DVD's and one PS2
game. The DVD's worked out about the same as a new music CD
but offered more. Once all new music is dumped onto DVD
with 5.1 sound (many music DVD's still have straight 2
channel PCM tracks) then the CD's will only have a niche
market.
