Subj: Silent PCs

While it's great that the PC is quieter, it unfortunately
means that more than one fatigued technician has accidently
"hot-swapped" (i.e. changed hardware with the computer
turned on) ISA/PCI/AGP cards, hard drives etc because they
don't realise they're on! Slashdot recently had an article
on this:

Subj: Noise

Speaking of noise - didn't one of your neighbours move
away...? ;-)

These are a new(?) type of fan that are pretty quiet:

A review:

The only odd thing is that these fans only come in 70mm!!
I'd like to know who decided that that was a good size when
most PC fans are 60 or 80mm?

Subj: Noise or not

In my experience quiet PCs are the exception rather than
the norm. Even new ones, I have installed a few Compaqs
lately that are far from quiet. Please could Advantage let
me know what power supply and CPU fan they use. I would
gladly upgrade my own.

Subj: noisy computers

You are lucky to have a quiet PC. From what I have seen
of other home built computers, they tend to be noisy.
Advantage make well built computers, and combined with the
fact that your PC is probably an Intel based system, it
should be quiet.

AMD cpus run hotter, and need better cooling. (With the
exception of Intels new hyperthreading CPU's, giving out
81.8watts of heat.) Most OEM built (compaq, hp etc)
machines will be quiet.
