Subj: The Osborne Computer

I must be getting on a little.

I've still got an Osborne 1 tucked away in the garage, I
won't turn it on because it worked OK last time and my mind
can therefore accept that it still works now.

I went to the States to get distribution rights for the
Osborne in New Zealand. I secured those rights but they
were also given to one other to share, so I didn't take
them up - not enough market in New Zealand at that stage to
justify two main distributors.

There was a saying around journalists at the time on how
Osborne was able to sell the computer so cheaply - They say
that he sells each one below cost, but expects he'd make it
up in volume!

The one I have tucked away in the garage has been upgraded
to the industry standard screen of 80x24 instead of the
Osborne standard 64x24 screen (ie; 80 characters x 24
lines).

Sad to hear of the passing.

Subj: Osbornes..

Sorry to hear about Adams demise..

Way back in the 80's I used many of his original Osbornes as
programming / ICE devices for a series of PLC's we were
marketing at the time.

Wrote our own compilers and other tools - in assembler - and
got to know the machine very well.

Made a small mod to the innards and mounted a custom built
I/O card in that convenient disk storage slot in the
middle.. Sold many in NZ and overseas, mainly to the meat
industry.

An excellent machine at the time.. Would love to get hold
of one for old times sake - I think I've still got the
genuine Osborne CPM diskettes etc somewhere...

Subj: Ultimate Geek Toy

I remember a friend of my dad had brought an Osborne, and
as a young seven old I thought it was just the ultimate when
I was finally allowed to play a primitive space invaders
game on it (after the adults had finished bashing the
keyboard playing the game!).

I would like to nominate the Osborne as the ultimate geek toy.

What would be the supreme geek toy? Nominate your favourite!
