From: Peter Jenkins For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Proxy Servers.... The other fact that annoys me about proxy servers is that you are still being charged for International traffic by the MB, whereas in actual fact the traffic is LOCAL to the ISPs proxy server! This has caused us a problem at work with a few websites which provide a subscription service, based on IP address. It seems like local traffic is direct and international is piped through this proxy, which I was unaware of until we signed up to this service and the provided a diagnostic page, which showed our IP address different to that which we were using! I immediately thought it was a proxy server, and sure enough upon doing a NSLOOKUP showed we were going out a a proxy. Fortunately our ISP was able to take us off the proxy for that site so we could use it again. From: Allister Jenks For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Who is to blame? The thief who stole the car may be the one who gets prosecuted, but tell your insurance company you left the keys in the car and see what happens. From: Richard For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Net4u What I find funny is that, according to the Net4U news/status page, they've contracted an independent third party to audit their network and say whether or not all is above board. This "independent third party", though, is one of Net4U's customers (as can be seen by looking them up at whitepages.co.nz, finding their web site's IP address, and finding out who that address is allocated to). I sense someone struggling in quicksand... From: Philip S For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: ISP Cache is evil to web designers When occasionally I need to change a web site so that it is hosted with another company it requires me to change the nameservers. Problem is that when I do this, domainz updates at 7pm and 10am I think, but Clear Net (this can be blanked if needed) seems to update their cache really weirdly or slowly or something. The last time I changed a web host which was for www.plutonicart.com I had to wait more than 24 hours for the cache to update so that I could upload my files etc! Meanwhile I asked other people who saw the new host fine (and was greeted with a lovely 'Page coming soon' page), friends on Orcon could see the new host immediatly and it will definatly effect my decision if I change hosts. Cache is a good idea, but for a few people we need to be able to request it to be updated for some sites.Hit Reload For Latest Comments
