Email Scam Targets Westpac Bank Customers
3 November 2003

It was only a matter of time, and now some customers of the Westpac Bank have begun receiving fake emails requesting them to visit the bank's website and enter their login details.

Here's a copy of the email:

Dear Westpac Bank Member,

This email was sent by the Westpac server to verify your e-mail address. You must complete this process by clicking on the link below and entering in the small window your Westpac Banking Customer ID and Password.
This is done for your protection --- because some of our members no longer have access to their email addresses and we must verify it.

To verify your e-mail address and access your bank account, click on the link below. If nothing happens when you click on the link, copy and paste the link into the address bar of your web browser.

Thank you for using Westpac Bank!

This automatic email sent to: [suppressed] Do not reply to this email.

Simple URL spoofing has made the site appear to be a geniune Westpac website, however some browsers give a hint to the deception by displaying a link to http://www.da.ru/ in a frame at the bottom of the screen.

Net users are reminded that they should never use links embedded in an email when visiting any banking or other website where allowing someone else access to your password and ID could be a problem.

It will be interesting to see how Westpac NZ responds to this scam.

Have your say.
