Government says no to unbundling
19 May 2004 IT Minister Paul Swain has announced that the government will follow the recommendations given in a Commerce Commission report on unbundling the local loop. Despite significant efforts on the part of Telstra and other competing players in the marketplace, the government has decided that Telecom can keep its monopoly on the loop. The Minister appeared happy to accept Telecom's assurances that a move towards wholesaling its digital data services and a promise that it would allow competition on some business-related circuits.
