Voyager/BellSouth to offer email by cellphone

Voyager and BellSouth are working together to deliver an "email by cellphone" service to BellSouth's cellular customers which will be known as "Internet Preview". Although trials are due to start this month, the service isn't expected to become commercially available until February or March of next year.

By converting the first 160 characters of an email into an SMS (Short Messaging Service) packet, the system will allow users of digital cellphones attached to BellSouth's network to view the first few lines of any email received.

How long before the service is extended into a synthesized voice that reads the entire message to you? I don't know, but it's probably only a matter of time.

This technology and FaxMail's "email to fax" service it means that reception of email is no longer reliant on the recipient having a computer. The introduction of Net-capable TV sets will further reduce email's reliance on traditional computer technologies.
