Time again for a little mirth, mayhem and idiocy from the backwoods of the Web.

The things some people put in their mouths! Just another example of how e-commerce is changing the shape of our world ;-)

An IT Fundamentalist Speaks
Too true to be funny. Anyone who has spent any time working in a medium to large IT department will realise this page contains many truths.

International Chindogu Society
This site is possibly the greatest waste of webspace I've ever seen. I've never seen anything so full of nothing.

Jet-What?
Hands up all those who have heard of Telecom's JetStream ADSL service...

Okay, hands up those who might think that a site calling itself JetStart.co.nz and promising "to connect your entire business to high-speed internet" might be a front for JetStream.

Now maybe they're offering to help people get onboard Telecom's JetStream service as well but, funny thing is -- they're plugging IHUG's excellent Ultra, high speed Internet service on that page.

Will Telecom be pleased?

Speaking of Passing Off
I see that the publishers of the excellent Netguide and IDG NZ have come close to blows over another passing off issue.

NetGuide claims that IDG's new "Net Magazine" is just too similar and that readers and retailers are confusing the two.

So what's the guts? Is a real war brewing here?

Well, I suggest we cast our minds back to a major battle which took place between IDG's PC World magazine and another (now demised) very similar publication, PC Magazine as covered by Aardvark way back in 1997.

As they say in the publishing business -- there's no such thing as bad publicity -- and you're nobody if you're not making a noise.

A New Cowboy In Town?
I was contacted this week by a company who have had close contact with yet another Internet Cowboy and are less than impressed with the outcome.

It seems this character rode into town and cut a swathe of cold-calls through an industrial area, convincing many of those he spoke to that they ought be on this Internet thing.

After signing them up to a no-name ISP (for what was probably a handsome commission), he proceeded to create a glorious three-page website with his trusty copy of FrontPage.

What a bloody mess!

It now seems that the company has a website that is worse than no site at all, a contract with an ISP which is "less than 100% reliable", and no record of the IDs and passwords associated with the website or its hosting.

So it would appear that it's not just the high-flyers and big investors who have turned their brains off when spending money on Net-related matters. Even the small to medium sized businesses out there are forgetting all about things such as references, written contracts and the other things one normally checks out when spending thousands of dollars.

Stay tuned for more on this one while I get the posse saddled up.
