From: Neil For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Zone Alarm - personal firewalls Bruce, I downloaded Zone Alarm for my home dial up PC recently and in the last few days I've been amazed at some of the probes it has picked up. There seem to be quite a lot lately from Taiwan and Korea. I don't know what the reason for these are but I'm certainly glad that I downloaded the free version of Zone Alarm - it's very simple and I'd agree with your recommendation for anyone to get it for their home pc. From: pipes For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Code Red Fun root@netlife:/usr/local/apache/logs# cat *error_log | grep default.ida > idafools.txt root@netlife:/usr/local/apache/logs# wc -l idafools.txt 914 idafools.txt Not bad for a few days work.... (since 5th August) Seems to be alot of Chinese based servers shining though at the moment too. Needless to say, poor snort is having a rough time. =) From: Michael For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Telecom Hackers? I wonder if any of the computers at Telecom could be used for hacking? I reckon some of the naughty boys and girls down at Telecom are using their computers for hacking!!! Have they EVER probed the ports of their customers computers?? I think we should send in the Computer Police to check out thier computers... From: Stewart Gray For : The Editor (for publication) Subj: Measuring the effect of DoS attempts Reading your article about DoS scans potentially costing ADSL users a lot of money I thought id mention BlackICE Defender. Ive started using it recently on my home machine, althogh ive been using it for a while on work machines. One feature is that it will actually measure how many k of packets have been received from Attacks on your system. On my dialup since 4oclock yesterday I have received 550k of attack packets on my system. Most comprise of HTTP Probes which arent too malicious apparently. Would be a good tool for adsl users wanting to monitor how much these naughty people are costing them !Now Have Your Say
