In a press release issued by Telecom Xtra yesterday it was disclosed that the Telco's ISP operation earned over $1 million from advertising on the site during the past 12 months.

The release also makes it clear that significant emphasis has been and will be placed on other revenue-generating activities such as e-commerce, where they're working with the BNZ to develop a credit-card gateway for secure Internet transactions.

Xtra also announced that their Web site saw million user-sessions for the month of September '97 (according to figures from AC Nielsen-McNair) and lay claim to being "the most visited site in Australasia".

During the past 12 months, Xtra have boosted their customer-base from 30,000 to over 85,000 according to Bob Smith, General Manager of Telecom Internet Services.

Other interesting statistics include:

  • The Xtra email server handles over 85,000 emails (2 GB) per day
  • Xtra's news (usenet) server processes around 3GB of traffic per day
  • 7 New POPs (modem clusters) were added last year, including Gisborne, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Tauranga, Wanganui and Whangarei.
  • Xtra now hosts 154 Web sites
"The Internet market has grown dramatically in New Zealand in the last 12 months - 39% of people (over the age of 10) have access to the Internet - double the figure of 12 months ago. We believe Xtra is a major contributor to that growth" says Smith.
