The future of the ORBS open relay blacklist appears to be up in the air right now after its operator, Alan Brown seems to have divested himself of his interests in Manawatu Internet Services (MIS).

Facing mounting legal and financial pressures that stem from the defamation case brought by former Domainz CEO Patrick O'Brien and court orders gained by XTRA and Actrix, Brown appears to have passed his user-base to Mercury Telecommunications Ltd and is winding up Manawatu Internet Services Ltd.

The announcement was made in an email sent to MIS customers late last week.

In the email, Brown states "The last 9 years of operation of Manawatu Internet Services Ltd (Dawghaus BBS up until 1994) have been enjoyable and entertaining, however the stress levels associated with operating a small ISP have been taking their toll on my health for the last 2-3 years and it really has become time to move on to different fields."

As reported by Aardvark on Friday, the ORBS website, previously hosted by MIS, now simply says "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the ORBS website is no longer available".

Good News, Bad News
The more you listen to the media and politicians, the more you realise that truth is often the victim of their words.

On the one hand we've got people telling us that there's a mass exodus of local hi-tech workers and skills and on the other hand we have good news stories that say they're coming back.

On the one hand we're told that government policies are helping our R&D activities and attracting overseas companies by providing a necessary catalyst and then we're told that some policies are still deterring such overseas investment.

I'd be interested to hear whether the feeling amongst IT workers has changed since the budget. Have you changed your mind about leaving or returning to NZ in the past month or so? If so -- what do you plan to do and why?
