Even Dow Jones can't make a buck from the Net

Proving just how hard it is to earn a dollar on the Net, Dow Jones shut down its 'Down Jones Information Network' (DJIN) Web site without warning yesterday.

The reason given for the abrupt termination of the site was a lack of profit and little prospect for improvement in the near future.

Since it came online six months ago, the site had attracted increasing numbers of users. Just a month ago the site was enhanced with the addition of extra content and switched to a subscription-based access which cost just $9.95 per month and eliminated the need to carry advertising.

If a major organisation with property as "hot" as Dow Jones can't spin a profit, what chance do the many other would-be Net-entrepreneurs have?
