Just as in New Zealand, the US domain-naming authorities have been struggling to find a solution to the potential for name-collisions and trademark disputes on the Net.

In the US they've come up with seven proposed new top-level domains:

.firmfor registered companies
.storefor net-shopping sites
.artsfor art-related and creative sites
.webfor things pertaining to the WWW
.recfor recreational subject matter
.infofor informational sites
.nomfor personal sites (ie: fred.nom)

No doubt ISOCNZ is watching the progress of this process closely with a view to using it as a model for its own proposed second level domain-name reorganisation. It would make good sense to follow any structures created by the US body, with perhaps the addition/retention of .iwi.nz.
