It's D (for defamation) Day for Alan Brown, the Manawatu Internet expert and anti-spam crusader who dared to call a spade a spade.

After leveling a series of "no holds barred" criticisms against Patrick O'Brien in his capacity as CEO of Domainz, Brown was slapped with a defamation suit and hauled off to court.

Unfortunately for Brown, it would appear that when it comes to defamation, the outcome is often more dependent on the calibre (and price) of your legal resources than it is on the merits of your case.

7amNews Sci/Tech

Coincidentally, this very situation has been echoed in the USA today with Sidney Blumenthal, a former White House aide having to drop a libel suit against Matt Drudge because he can't afford what looked set to become a very protracted legal battle.

Most legal opinions suggest that Blumenthal was clearly libeled by Drudge who published a column in which it was alleged that the former aide had beaten his wife.

Unfortunately for Blumenthal, Drudge's legal bills were being picked up by his political foes, their almost bottomless pockets meaning that it was simply impractical to extract justice from the system.

And it might appear that this is where Mr Brown finds himself today.

Brown's own financial resources are reportedly exhausted but O'Brien remains able to tap the massive coffers of his former employer to support his relentless prosecution.

Unfortunately it would appear possible that who is right and who is wronged will once again simply get lost in the shuffle of cheque-books and legal gobbledygook.

To ISOCNZ's disgrace, they are, through their inaction, effectively condoning the ongoing funding of this circus by Domainz and, it would seem to some, going out of their way to use every tactic and technicality available to them in order to help avoid a special general meeting mooted to discuss the issue.

Clearly ISOCNZ members are still not in control of the society. I suggest that those who object to the current situation in respect to the action against Alan Brown immediately resign their membership in the realisation that ISOCNZ is, and always has, a vehicle designed to protect the interests of a very few.
