Hold on to your magnetometers folks, the sun's magnetic field is about to flip, with NASA experts predicting that the event will take place in just a few short months.
According to one solar physicist working at Standford University, "this change will have ripple effects through out the solar system".
Oh my gawd! Why hasn't the mainstream media caught wind of this and started declaring that doomsday is just around the corner?
Simple -- it's because despite the far-reaching effects of this flip, it is in fact a very regular occurrence which is simply a part of the regular 11 year solar sunspot cycle.
Although there are huge amounts of energy involved in this change of flux, the effects are so tiny that the regular flip-flop simply goes unnoticed here on earth.
During the reversal process, the magnetic field produced by the sun actually disappears for a short period -- during which time the level of cosmic radiation that enters the solar system from distant sources can increase significantly. Fortunately for us here on Earth, our own magnetic field provides plenty of protection against this potentially harmful energy.
However, stay tuned because I'm sure the lunatic fringe will start predicting all sorts of doom and disasters once news of this celestial event reaches them.
Perhaps it's just the nature of man to expect the worst and to read all sorts of significance into natural events they do not fully understand -- who knows. What you can be sure of however, is the wave of YouTube videos, web-pages and other warnings these idiots will start broadcasting.
Fortunately I still have the tinfoil hat I used to protect myself from the last heliosphere reversal (it must have worked perfectly because I'm still here) so I'll be keeping that close at hand for the moment of disaster.
Perhaps readers have their own ideas as to how best deal with a celestial event of this magnitude and significance -- I'd be keen to hear them.
In the meantime -- watch the skies! :-)
