Can I become an influencer?

27 Sept 2024

Every time I take a walk into town it frightens me.

It's not that I fear for my own safety, it's that I am constantly reminded about what happens to us if we don't put in at least a little effort to stay fit and healthy.

I regularly see men who are years younger than me hobbling around, drenched in the frailty of age -- or zipping along the footpath in mobility scooters whilst looking as if they're almost asleep.

To be fair, some of these people have likely been dealt a bad hand by nature or circumstance and may have just got bad genes or suffered from injury or unavoidable illness but many are just a victim of their own inertia.

I'm wondering if I should do something about that.

As a YouTube veteran of 18 years, I'm considering starting another channel to address the issues of frailty in our more senior citizens. Yes, I could be the next big fitness influencer (chuckles uncontrollably).

Cue Tui's ad.

Well maybe not.

I'm pretty sure that most people in their 60s or older would *love* to be stronger, fitter and more robust than they are right now.

There are countless medical studies that clearly show an undeniable link between muscle-mass, strength, general fitness and longevity -- and who would not like to live even one year longer, especially if it was a year of good health?

One of the biggest and most rapidly growing subjects on YouTube right now is that of strength and fitness, albeit mainly for young 20-somethings who want to look like the Terminator. That's not the market I'm interested in addressing because it has more than enough "influencers" shilling their bogus supplements and promising that "this one trick will double your gains" in clickbait videos.

I'd rather simply make older people aware that it only takes 10 minutes a day, four days a week to become twice as strong, significantly increase the muscle-mass that protects you from injury and extend your useful life by a worthwhile amount.

There are no "hacks" or tricks to becoming more robust in old age -- just some really simple basics that anyone can adopt but which can make a huge difference in the quality and length of the time you've got left on the planet.

I really think that most people are totally unaware of just how simple and easy it is to improve your lot through some simple exercises you can do any time of the day in the privacy and comfort of your own home.

The great thing is that the worse shape you're in, the more improvement you'll see.

One thing is for sure though, I don't want to come across as some kind of fitness evangelist, preaching with an almost religious zeal to those who might listen. I'd rather simply offer information that others can use to improve their lot with minimal cost and effort.

It will be extremely interesting to see if I can gain any traction as an "influencer" in this new arena. Quite frankly, I'm not expecting much in the way of success but you never know. I'll give it six months and see how things go.

If you're in the 55+ age bracket and are interested in coming along for the ride, I'll mention the launch of the new channel in a future column. If you're not in the least bit interested, fear not... this isn't an "instead of" my existing activities, it's an "as well as". I'll still be publishing this column and my YT channels as before.

Carpe Diem folks!
