Is this really the world today?

1 April 2025

I had trouble believing what I read this morning.

In fact, right now I'm having trouble working out many aspects of life in 2025. Anyone who'd jumped straight from 2000 to 2025 would likely be gobsmacked by the changes that have taken place and the fact that we just seem to accept them without so much as a sigh.

First up is an article I read today which shows just how a US billionaire has pretty much legalised the concept of racketeering, for his own benefit.

I'm talking about "let's go to Mars" Elon Musk but this time I'm not referring to his outrageous collection of quarter of a billion dollars in payments for Roadster vehicles that have never been built.

I'm referring to a story on Arstechnica where it's reported that Big brands are spending small sums on X to stay out of Musk’s crosshairs.

The article reports that Musk has taken legal action against a number of big brand companies for not advertising on his X platform. Those companies include Shell, Nestlé, Pinterest, and Lego.

Excuse me?

WTF?

How can a company be sued for not doing business with another -- in a supposedly free country like the USA?

Have things really gotten so bad that when you're the richest man in the world you can simply demand that other companies give you money or you'll sue them -- and that's legal?

I really think we ought to rename Musk to "Teflon Elon" because, if reports are to be believed, he is normalising actions that would get any other person locked up for a good period of time.

Then there's Trump's thinly veiled threats to invade and annex friendly countries such as Greenland and even Canada so as to expand the territories that are called "The USA".

When Putin does this he's roundly denounced as a villain... when Trump does it he's simply "Making America Great Again".

What silliness is this?

The real tragedy is not that this is happening, after all, we all know that power and greed can corrupt even the purest of souls. No, the real tragedy is that everyone is just standing around and watching this lunacy take place.

Clearly, the insane are running the assylum and nothing good can come of this.

Or have I simply forgotten the teachings of that prophetic George Orwell novel 1984?

"War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength"

Perhaps I need to visit The Ministry of Truth and have by perspectives adjusted.

Someone please tell me this is an April Fool's joke.

Carpe Diem folks!
