The dystopia is here

23 April 2026

Despite bing a long-time cynic and believer in the old saying "power corrupts", even I have been gobsmacked by recent revelations in respect to recent dirty-dealings within the halls of power.

We know that while many people enter the wild world of politics with the best of intentions, there are an incredible array of temptations that can derail even the most determinedly virtuous who must operate in that environment.

Whether it's the chance to make a few dollars by way of seemingly "harmless" inside-trading made possible through advance knowledge of market-shaping policies or as the result of outright bribery and corruption, the world of politics is a minefield.

I have no doubt that there's nothing new here, perhaps it's just that in the era when most people get their news and information directly from the internet, we're now becoming far more aware of this dirty dealing than we may have ever been in the past.

Concerns that US president Donald Trump may have been leveraging his insider-knowledge to hugely enrichen himself and his family members has now hit the mainstream media.

This comes as no surprise to those who've actually been paying attention to what's been going on.

For example, as I've reported here in the past, one of Trump's sons was appointed as a consultant to the board of Unusual Machines -- despite his apparent total lack of familiarity with the technologies involved. Amazingly, the Trump government then moved to place the world's leading drone maker (DJI) on "the covered list" which immediately precluded the importation of new models from that Chinese manufacturer.

Guess what this did to the fortunes of one of the very few US-based drone makers which could fulfill US military contracts and guess who benefitted enormously from being given that position?

Even now, Trump's offspring seem to be positioning themselves within the US drone industry so as to take further advantage of political decisions made by their father, even including those generated by the war with Iran.

Speaking of US military drone contracts, it's just been announced that the Pentagon is seeking a budget of US$54 billion for future drone purchases.

One could be forgiven for thinking that Donald sure knows how to look after his family.

The undercurrent of apparent corruption isn't just limited to the drone sector however. If you haven't already seen this excellent exposé by Gamers Nexus, I highly recommend you set aside a few minutes to watch the proof that "The USA has the best government money can buy" and discover why the world has so much to fear from the influence of "big tech" right now.

Perhaps you can now see the reasons for my cynicsm and fear.

Remember, this is just the stuff we know about. Goodness know how deep the rot really runs.

Carpe Diem folks!
